Abstract
It is well known that flexible bronchofiberscopic examination is one of best methods for diagnosing various pulmonary diseases.
The:.authors have done 108 bronchofiberscopies in patients with various pulmonary diseases, at the Department of Internal Medicine, Presbyterian Medical Center, Jeonju and Dr. J.H. Lee¢¥s Medical Clinic, Jeonju, during 19 months from March, 1975 to September, 19:76.
Results were as follows:
1. After local anesthesia with 4% Lidocaine, we performed a bronchoscopy by enter the transnasal method or transoral method. The transnasal method was easier to do and with less discomfort to patients than the transoral method.
2. Among 52 patients with lung cancer, we found bronchial abnormalities or confirmed malignancy with biopsy or both on 50 patients. Two patients were negative on both, but were confirmed by some other method. The overall diagnostic accuracy in the cases of lung cancer was 96%, bronchofiberscopically.
3. In the cases of other diseases such as bron- . chiectasis, pulmanary tuberculosis, pneumonia or lung abscess, etc., we could find not only bronchial abnormalities, but also could obtain specimens for cytologic or bacteriologic examination: We suggest that bronchofiberscopy is a valuable diagnostic method in these cases also.
4. Among 108 bronchoscopies, no complications were noted except a few developed transient hemoptysis or transient febrile reaction.
